Fighting Stress Causes

TV news causing stress case

8 months ago, during a short vacation period, I was sitting on the couch watching TV news. In fact it was a session of TV news (news after news, channel after channel). Just after that, I noticed that I was experiencing typical stress symptoms ( irritability, frustration, sense of worrying, and a terrible headache). With all these deaths, accidents, crimes, financial difficulties, it was obvious what caused my reaction. I realised that TV news were a great evening stress factor for me not just that day but for years. On the other hand I was the kind of man who always wanted to be well informed. In fact I was addicted to TV news.

What should I do?

I took my decision. With too many stress conditions in my life there were no place for another one.

So... I decided: NO MORE TV NEWS.

But... if you want to stop bad habits, you must replace them with good ones. So I decided to adopt a more positive attitude: reading my favourite books, better communication with my wife, having fun with family and friends (playing my guitar, singing, etc.), exercising more.

There is no need to mention that since then the evening stress I was feeling for years, disappeared.

I think that this case is a great example of what can happen when:
1. you recognize your stress feelings,
2. you find out what is causing stress in your life,
3. you take action to change the situation (in our case alter the stressor) and
4. you introduce effective stress relievers or positive habits in your life.

Manage Stress

An old proven formula

So your goal is to manage stress. Difficult task. Stress is a tuff enemy taking too many forms. What can you do to beat it?

Here is an old proven formula:

1. Learn to recognize when you are feeling stressed
(We'll talk in detail about symptoms, in another post)

2. Find out what is causing stress in your life
From my experience this is the key point No 1. If you know the cause you have more chances to beat your enemy (stress and its symptoms).

3. Take action.
An active attitude is the key point No 2. Reduce the amount of stress in your life. If possible avoid or alter the stressor. Otherwise change your reaction to stress, either accepting the stressor or adapting to the stressor.

4. Take advantage of effective stress relievers
(We'll talk in detail about stress relievers, in another post)

Next time we'll talk about one of my experiences with stress. That case indicates how you can apply the above proven formula in your life.
